Building your own Raspberry Pi Images


The Vagrant file on https://github.com/alastairhm/pibuild sets up a build environment for building Raspberry Pi images from the repository https://github.com/RPi-Distro/pi-gen.

I am using it to create a custom image minimal with Docker pre-installed based on https://github.com/jonasrosland/pi-gen although you can edit the scripts to pre-install the packages you want in your image.

This module https://github.com/garethr/garethr-docker lets you install and control Docker using Puppet.

For example this Vagrant setup spins up an Ubuntu VM and then using the Docker module spins up a Jenkins build server Docker container with a few simple commands;

include docker
docker::image { 'jenkins': }
docker::run { ‘some-jenkins’:
image => ‘jenkins’,
ports => ‘8080:8080’,
volumes => ‘/vagrant/jenkins’,
use_name => true,
}

To work my way through the book Cloning Internet Applications with Ruby I've created a development environment using Vagrant and Puppet.

You will need the following installed;

VirtualBox VM https://www.virtualbox.org/
Vagrant http://www.vagrantup.com/
