Building Raspberry PI image using Vagrant

Building your own Raspberry Pi Images


The Vagrant file on https://github.com/alastairhm/pibuild sets up a build environment for building Raspberry Pi images from the repository https://github.com/RPi-Distro/pi-gen.

I am using it to create a custom image minimal with Docker pre-installed based on https://github.com/jonasrosland/pi-gen although you can edit the scripts to pre-install the packages you want in your image.

No static external IP on Raspberry Pi

My Internet provider doesn't supply me with a static IP address with my broadband, so my Raspberry Pi external web address can wander if my router or connectigets reset. There are third party sites which will provide you with a static URL which follows your wandering IP address but its fun to do it yourself.

To keep me updated on the current IP I wrote a Ruby script which I run via crontab to check and Tweet me is the IP address changes.

You can clone the script at Github https://github.com/alastairhm/myip it uses a Ruby Twitter API library which can be found at https://github.com/sferik/twitter to do the direct message with the new IP.

Running Tiny Tiny RSS News Feed reader on my Raspberry Pi.

Setup on Lighttpd and MySQL using the instructions on http://tt-rss.org/redmine/projects/tt-rss/wiki as a replacement to Google Reader.

Working well so far.

Raspbmc

Got my second Raspberry Pi setup as a media center with Raspbmc.
Wifi setup was painless just a case of connecting it and entering the wifi connection details.
Just need a new powered USB hub as the power supply died on the one I've got.

Raspberry Pi Media Center

I had a quick look at the openELEC ( http://openelec.tv/)  media center for the Raspberry Pi last night using Berryboot ( http://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot ) to install it along side Debian on my card.

Looks pretty good, lots of plugins you can install to be able to access online content like 4oD and YouTube.

Might need to buy another Pi for the front room :)

Setting up Piwigo on Raspberry Pi

Installed the gallery software Piwigo on my Raspberry Pi, screenshots below.

After installing lighttpd and MySQL5 and the other prerequisites you can install it using

sudo apt-get install piwigo

Although this is an older version, if you want the latest you'll need to go through the manual installation route which is detailed on their web page.

On my Ubuntu desktop, I did a trial run updating the version installed with apt-get using the Piwigo's internal upgrade option but this failed so might not be a viable option. More upgrade information here.

Setting Up

External access from Internet using No-Ip, you'll need to configure your router to pass HTTP requests to the Raspberry Pi.

Local network access from Ubuntu desktop.

Raspberry Pi SD Card problems

Raspberry Cry

Was going to fire up my Raspberry Pi for the first time yesterday but had issues creating boot SD card for it on Windows 7. As you can see here from my post at the Pi Forum.

Looks like it was either problems with my desktop or the SD Card reader I was using as it was getting write errors when using the two Windows methods of creating the boot image.

Hopefully I can get the SD card reformat with GParted so I can try again, most annoying that I tripped up at the first hurdle.
